Gene Baker at b3 guitars has built quite the name for himself as a world renowned guitar builder; working with many of the worlds finest luthiers and guitar companies around. He's been the head Master Builder at the Fender Custom Shop, was a builder at the Gibson Custom Shop and built many instruments under the Premier Builders Guild, for names such as Koll, Fano, Gustavsson, Giffin and Schroeder. To say he has been prolific in the world of high end guitars would be an understatement.
Now with his focus on his own line of fully hand built b3's and no longer building for other brands, Gene is a force to be reckoned with. The attention to detail on each new b3 we've had in, is second to none. These are immaculate guitars that give you everything you love about vintage instruments; while bringing something new and honest to the table.
The Phoenix V is a true cross between Tele and
Firebird. These are built with the same neck through construction as a Firebird, but with a comfortable and familiar smaller body design. The scale length is all Tele, being 25 1/2”. This keeps the traditional snap and clarity in the bridge position that T-Stye players would expect. The Firebird pickups have a beautifully rich and present chime to them, with great note definition. With some overdrive, the tone is still crisp and warm, but deeper and more guttural. There are lots of tonal possibilities between the 5 way switch and coil taps. So weather you’re looking for a true Tele tone, a fatter more aggressive hum-bucking tone or the twangy in-between positions of a Strat; it’s all at your fingertips.
Another key feature to the Phoenix is the heavily contoured body, which makes for a comfortable playing experience, even when playing for long periods of time. The instrument is very well balanced seated or standing and weighs in at only 7lbs 2oz. This guitar is dressed to the nines, with its lightly aged Inca Silver nitro finish and dark rosewood board with both binding and W/B/W fingerboard purfling. Don’t hesitate on this one, it’s an impeccable build.
