Description

SN 621. Friends, here is a superpower Advanced Jumbo replica from the workshop of Rudi Blazer and Willi Henkes in Tubingen Germany. These two world renowned master luthiers are well known for their authentic replicas and reinterpretations of golden era acoustics built in small batches, by hand, using traditional methods and the highest quality materials. This AJ replica was built specifically for Jet City Guitars and is brand new.

Gibson’s AJ is an intriguing model. When introduced in 1936, it became the flagship of Gibson’s fledging line of dreadnought guitars. The long scale (25.5”) and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides made it a direct and worth competitor of Martin’s D-28. With the world was mired in depression, it seemed an odd time to introduce a flagship flattop model made from the finest materials at a premium price. As a result, Gibson succeeded in selling only 300 between 1936 and 1940 when it was discontinued. A desirable rarity, prices today are reaching $65-70K for the few good original examples.

This guitar is the happy marriage of Gibson’s golden era guitar architecture, B&H’s superb craftsmanship and access to high quality tonewoods. The back and sides are very select Brazilian; the top is full moon harvested Alpine Spruce, Brazilian fretboard with the AJ signature “diamond and arrowhead” MOP inlayed position markers, headstock painted black with inlayed arrowheads and B&H “banner” logo. The shaded top is classic old Gibson is as is the simple ivoroid binding and rosette. The only deviation from the 30’s AJ aesthetic is the tortoise pickguard as there are, sadly, no really good copies of the old firestripe guards. Replica cream colored bridge pins from Antique Acoustics on the BRW bridge complete the look.

The tone is big and lush and piano-like. The interior bracing pattern and top tuning is informed by an x-ray a well-known Gibson enthusiast took of an AJ. As we know, the combination of a forward X, small maple bridge plate and two scalloped tone bars allows the top to ring to its full potential and produce amazing tone.
She comes in a good quality Canadian hardwood case. The guitar is in my shop so shipping and import duties are included in the price. Here is a prime opportunity to own a Blazer & Henkes without the epochal wait or currency risk.
