Ever heard of a Bludotone Bludo-Drive? Larry Carlton has. It’s one of his go-to amps for touring and recording, so much so that he keeps one in Brussels for his European tours and one in Tokyo for whenever he plays there. He has several Bludo-Drives here in the States for both touring and recording. He describes it as Dumble-like with an open sound and tight, sweet overdrive. Nobody cares more about tone or has more finely tuned ears than Mr. Carlton, so we can’t think of any amp recommendation higher than that.
This Bludo-Drive has the High Plate Skyline voicing with 6L6 power tubes. It is a 100 watt amp, with a half-power switch. On the front panel are separate Preamp, Overdrive, and PowerAmp control sections, including Bright switch, Mid switch, and Rock/Jazz switch in the Preamp section. Back panel includes output speaker impedance selector, power attenuation switch, and Overdrive and Preamp boost switches. The amp is in fine working order and also comes with a rack-mount Bludotone Loop-a-Lator.
The Loop-a-Lator is a single rack-space all-tube impedance matching device that allows you to use the Bludo-Drive to its fullest potential. The Loop-a-Lator takes the signal from the “Preamp Out” and changes the impedance to the proper level to drive your rack/pedal effects, and then brings the level from your effects back up to match the “Power Amp In”. The Loop-a-Lator also acts as a secondary master volume, and when used without effects, the Loop-a-Lator works to smooth out the high end response of your amplifier.
Here is your chance to acquire a rare and wonderful amp and effects processor of undisputed design and build quality. While it may not make you sound like Larry Carlton, it will definitely ensure that you sound like the best version of you, and that’s really what we’re all after, isn’t it?
