Offered for sale:
Used 1996 Carvin AE185 Acoustic/Electric Thinline Guitar serial number 69060.
This guitar is in good condition, neck and frets are fine. Cosmetically a 1” x 3/8” bit of finish is starting to lift behind the bridge on the treble side (see photo). Also, there is a chip on the treble side of the headstock edge, overall, the guitar is nice and feels real nice.
Like the Hamer Duo-Tone this is a semi-hollow, 2 humbucker, electric guitar with a wooden acoustic bridge which houses a piezo acoustic pickup. This allows the electric to convert to a more authentic sound than piezo elements on a metal electric bridge when amplified.
Unfortunately, the acoustic preamp is noisy and the original parts are no longer available. So, we are selling this guitar as is. Thus, the lower price.
Fortunately, it is still a fine Carvin electric worthy of its Carvin heritage and, if desired, a good project to revive the acoustic features.
Carvin AE 185
Standard on this model is a mahogany neck-through body construction a 25-inch scale ebony neck, locking Sperzels, and the combination of a standard Les Paul-type pickup and switching system (standard 3-way switch) and the added flexibility of a belly-bridge housing a high-quality transducer yielding a realistic and very sweet acoustic guitar sound. The mix and variety available through the blend knob provide more possible sounds than most people can get out of three guitars.
The electronics feature two Carvin humbuckers and an under-saddle pickup. The controls include a three-way selector switch for the electric pickups, a coil-split switch for each pickup, and a phase switch. There is a master volume pot, a tone pot for the electric pickups, a tone pot for the acoustic pickup, and a pot for blending electric and acoustic signals. The guitar has two output jacks for sending the electric and acoustic signals to separate amps.
The AE-185 has the feel of a well-worn Les Paul Junior, with a perfect fretting job, no raw edges, and an ebony board that is resonant and a pleasure to play. The intonation was right on, assisted by a carved saddle, and before ever plugging this baby in, we had a feeling it was a winner. Adding to the pleasure of playing the 185 was its extremely manageable weight and the intuitive feel of the controls – very familiar to anyone who loves a Les Paul.
Hard-shell case included.

*Please note: we do our best giving descriptions of used pieces. We have found it impossible to describe every mark on an instrument or amp that is not in the "mint" category. Also, what's important to you may not be important to someone else. For example, you may say, "I don't care what it looks like as long as it plays or sounds well." Another person may say, "Body cosmetics are very important to me so tell me about every scratch, nick and blemish." So, please ask the questions that are most important to you. If you ask they will be answered. They are free and there's no limit. Additional photos can also be made available.
