Summary: Made in Canada, the Dingwall Afterburner uses a Novax fanned fret system which allows for a longer scale length on the low strings, preserving string tension and even tonality across the strings.
Body: Alder.Burst gloss poly finish.
Neck: 5-piece maple with medium thin C shape. Satin finish. Wenge fretboard with side dots (no fret markers on board). Novax fanned fret system. 37” scale length (on the low B side). 1.8” nut width.
Electronics/Hardware: FD-3 4L neodymium hum-cancelling pickups. Master volume, master tone, 4 position rotary pickup selector. Series/parallel toggle. Neutrik locking jack. Black hardware. Dingwall custom-made by Hipshot bridge and tuners. Dunlop strap locks with “Reach Reducing” pin on back.
Cosmetics: This bass is in great shape. There is little sign of wear apart from a few small superficial finish dings. There is one ding to the headstock tip and a small amount of the label decal has worn off. The neck, fretboard and frets are in excellent condition.
Playability: The satin-finished neck is wide, flat and very smooth. The fanned frets require a small amount of adjustment for players used to traditional fretting, but quickly become natural-feeling and easy to play. The rotary pickup selector doesn’t load down the pickups like a blend or second volume control. The resulting tone has great dynamic range with lots of punch. The tone gets really growly with the bridge pickup soloed. Switch to both pickups in parallel for a nicely “produced” sounding tone with scooped mids that’s great for sitting back in the mix with lots of detail to the note, or for a perfect slap tone. Need more power? Switch to series for a heavy, full sounding humbucker tone that cuts, make that pounds through a mix. Looking for a deep mellow tone reminiscent of a 50’s P? Solo the neck pickup, dial down the tone a bit and you’re there.
