Here we have an Epiphone Newport bass that is the absolute definition of cool when it comes to vintage short-scale basses. Dating to 1962, this early Newport bass is in very good vintage condition. Someone scratched “0759” (their birthdate, maybe?) into the pickguard and backplate, but it’s not too noticeable unless you look for it (see photos). One extra washer has been added to the back of the E tuning machine. A strap button was moved from the neck heel to the upper bout for better balance, but other than that, this guitar is all-original. The finish is lightly faded but has plenty of red. A few dings here and there, but overall the bass looks really great.
Basic Specs: Original tuners. Nut width of 1 3/4 inches. Mahogany neck with a 30.5 inch scale length. Neck depth at the first fret is .92 inches and at the twelfth fret .98 inches. Rosewood fingerboard with 20 frets in very good condition. Gibson-made EB-style humbucker with original wiring and pots.
The Gibson bass humbucker has bottom end for days and to our ears it doesn’t sound “muddy” at all, just big, old-school tone. You can dial a reasonable amount of treble into the bass, and of course with the right amp and/or pedals, it can cover a lot more territory than you’d think. And it’s so easy to play, it’s almost criminal.
We love this one and we think you will, too. Grab it quick. At this price it’s probably not going to last long. Comes with its original blue soft shell case.
