This Epiphone Pathfinder EA-28RVT from 1965 is a Gibson made amplifier, equivalent to their Falcon, and is one of the most underappreciated amps from the 60's. There's no cache from any noted artists having used the amp back then, however many guitarists did cut their teeth on this and the Falcon.
Gibson amps from the period were maligned by their very design. They were built to stay clean, almost like having a governor, and the tone was pretty lifeless. Non-invasive mods can be performed to open the amps up, giving you the output overdrive that we all dig.
I've been working on amps some in the shop with the help of my friend long time amp guy. I grabbed this amp months ago with the intent to go through it and perform the mods. It was not running right at all. My familiarity with Gibson amps lacks, and the shop has been full of other work that I'm more dialed to perform, so this amp sat to the side.
I decided to bring the amp to Skip Simmons. He champions these amps and knows what to do to get them right.
Ironically, Skip found that this example did not require the mods that I talk about above, that it was likely an earlier version of the Pathfinder, internally. He did a full service of the amp while it was there. He updated caps, swapped out the power cable, and shortened the cable to the footswitch to reduce noise that it induces into the amp.
It now sounds excellent and runs perfectly. The reverb on these amps is different in a very good way.
The transformers and CTS speaker are original.
