Offered here is a fabulous great instrument from the early years of the Fender Custom Shop, a model called the "Custom Esquire" of which just 12 examples were built, this example being #12 in the series. Many consider these John Page-era Custom Shop guitars among Fender's finest. Once you play this guitar, it is easy to see why so many feel this way.
This beautifully-built instrument has what appears to be a one-piece Ash body with a transparent blonde nitrocellulose lacquer finish. It was not aged and would be what was later termed an "NOS" format instrument. The guitar has a total weight of just 6 pounds, 14 ounces! The neck is made from a particularly nice slab of birdseye Maple which has been given a large C-shape with depth measurements of .90" at the first fret, increasing to .97" at the twelfth fret with nicely rounded shoulders and feels like a '52 Tele neck shape to me. The fretboard has a 9.5" radius, the frets are 6105's and it has a 1.650" bone nut.
While called an "Esquire" this guitar was always intended to be a two-pickup instrument and was shipped with two pickguards. It came from the factory as you see it here with a black Bakelite guard with two "Custom Wound" single coils in a traditional Tele layout. The guitar was factory routed for a neck humbucker and also comes with a second pickguard with a "Stealth Humbucker" by Seymour Duncan. Both of the original pickguards are included with this guitar. Controls include volume, tone and a 4-way switch.
Play this guitar and you will be impressed! In these early years, Custom Shop guitars were even more special than they are today and the materials and care that went into the manufacturing of this instrument are immediately evident. It plays superbly and sounds fabulous, as the attached sound sample will attest to.
While built 22 years ago, this guitar remains in superb condition and has seen little play. Upon very close inspection in the right light you will find some very light scuffs and a few tiny indentations in the clear coat, but no significant finish flaws and the frets remain in excellent shape with no divots. It comes in it's original Fender/G&G case, along with the certificate of authenticity, the ash tray bridge cover, both pickguards and various other accessories.
Get yourself this superb example of an early Fender Custom Shop Telecaster/Esquire. You will be very glad you did!
