Here we have a rare 1949 Fender 5A3 Tweed Deluxe Amp, an example that is of the earliest tweed amps Fender produced, proceeded only by the coveted "woody" amps.

The design of these early Deluxe amps results in sweet over driven tone and fat honk.  They utilize a s style of phase inverter is less hi-fi and imparts a certain grittiness to the amp.  They don't have a ton of headroom, but the overdrive is divine.  It's fat, crunchy, and just plain cool, like a bigger, more powerful Champ with far wider frequency range.

The original transformers are in place and are running strong.  The amp has seen service across the circuit, something that will eventually come for all Tweeds as caps eventually age out and stray to far from spec to remain useful.  A grounded power cable has been added.

The tweed is original, as is the grille, and they are both in pretty remarkable shape for their age.  The handle is replaced, using the original mounting hardware.

This piece came in with a lame 12" speaker, so I dug in my stash and installed a reconed Jensen P12Q from 1952.  The amp opened up nicely after the change.  It is a ripper for sure, especially when driven with P90s, though my favorite guitar pairing with the amp is a Tele.

Mahar's Vintage Guitars is a brick-and-mortar and web-based retailer. We are happy to talk with you before you make a purchase.   Please reach out if you feel so inclined! We cross market our items here and on our own site, so items are subject to sale elsewhere at any time (however we will never cancel a sale if it happens here first). See our profile here, our Google reviews as well as our 100% positive Reverb feedback. Also, Reverb limits us to only 25 pictures of our items. There is a good chance we have more.
