Summary: This vintage Fenders serial number dates it to 1969 but the original pots date 1970. It was definitely played out and shows much of the authentic wear that today’s reliced reproduction instruments can only aspire to replicate. Although it clearly spent time on a stage, it was never abused. It appears really well cared for and was likely played with flatwounds its whole life since the original frets have almost no wear. The neck has a fantastic profile with fairly pronounced shoulders and a heavily worn and rounded over finger-board edge for a very smooth and comfortable feel. It ships in its original hard-shell case with deep red plush interior and original bridge and pickup covers.
Body: Solid alder body double cutaway with a beautiful sunburst finish and original tortoise pickguard.
Neck: Maple neck with a rosewood veneer fingerboard, 20 frets, 34” scale length, 1 ½” nut width and black and gold Fender decal.
Pickups/Hardware: Original P-bass split magnet pickup, knurled knobs, one volume knob, one tone knob and bridge with individual steel saddles.
Cosmetics: There is a fair amount of heavy wear through the finish down into the wood on the back contour and arm rest edge. There’s weather checking in the finish, lots of scratches, dents, dings, scuffs and wear through the finish down the treble side of the neck. There is also one extra hole in the pickguard by the output jack.
Overall, this bass has that great authentically worn vintage look and feel but is in great shape structurally with no issues to mention.
Playability: This vintage Fender bass plays great up & down the fingerboard. Our in-house guitar tech has just inspected and set this bass up with a straight neck. It is currently strung up with a nice set of semi-flatwound strings – the action is low & the frets are in good shape with plenty of life left. It truly one of the best playing basses we have in our shop at the moment.
Modifications: One of the saddle height adjustment screws has been changed to a slotted machine screw. The hole does not appear to have been widened to accommodate the screw and it functions and adjusts quite well. This was probably the best fix for a lost height adjustment screw in the 70s. There is one extra hole in the pickguard.
