Here’s a real piece of Fender history, this original 1963 Fender Stratocaster in Silver Sparkle Sunburst was used and was owned by surf rock legend Eddie Bertrand! His main group was known as “Eddie and the Showman” after the demise of his former band the “Bel-Airs,” they had several hits throughout the 1960s and served an important role in defining surf rock of the era. This particular guitar is another fantastic example of Fender’s “original” sparkle finishes, often done by Dennis Swiden. Under the pickguard, we can see “For Sonic Blue” inscribed on the body, perhaps what the body was originally intended to be painted before it was selected for a Sparkle finish. This beautifully flamed neck has been played in for an incredibly comfortable feel, and this trio of single-coil pickups are nicely balanced for great tone in each switch position. The guitar has taken on an even patina, making the silver appear greenish, but we can see some of the original silver in some worn areas. Additionally, in this case, you will find photos of this guitar in the hands of Mr. Bertrand that drive home just how special this piece is; if only this guitar could talk there’s no telling what amazing things it has witnessed!
