1958 Fender Super 5F4 Tweed

Allegedly, the Super was Leo Fender's favorite amp. I don't know if it was a tweed or a later one but the tweed Super is a great amp. There are two rather different versions of the narrow panel tweed Super. This is a 5F4 which has a 26 watt output using 6L6 (5881) power tubes. The lower power 5E6 uses 6V6 power tubes. The Super, Bandmaster and Pro all use the same circuit with only the output transformer differing (2.6 ohm, 4 ohm or 8 ohm). 26 watts gives you enough headroom for playing clean at moderate volume. The more popular Deluxe is sadly lacking in headroom (it is a wonderful amp but somewhat limited in its application). Of the three "middle" tweeds, the Super is the lightest and the smallest. The Pro gives you a bit more bottom with its 15" speaker and the Bandmaster adds a third 10" speaker and even more headroom but is a lot more expensive and relatively rare. The Super is right in the sweet spot for all but the largest venues. Prices have been rising steadily for Fender tweeds as a new generation discovers how great an old vintage amp can be without all those pedals. This 58 Super is in excellent condition. The tweed and grill cloth are original and barely show any wear. The original P10R speakers are dated 21st week of 58 and have been recently re-coned. The electrolytics and a few other caps have been replaced. The important yellow Astrons are intact as are the original transformers. The panel is like new and all the lettering and numerals are intact. It sounds spectacular. Clean or dirty, this amp delivers.
