Some 50+ years ago, a late 60’s Gibson SG (with Maestro vibrato) became my first humbucker electric and one of the primary gigging instruments of my youth. Back then I was looking for the Gibson sound to compliment my Tele with its single coil tone (and likely couldn’t swing the extra cash for an LP). To this day, the SG remains a model that I am quite fond of. Offered here is a fabulous example, a '61 SG Standard “Fat Neck” built in the Gibson Custom Shop for Guitar Center and completed in 2019.

Most SG’s have relatively thin necks, but limited model one has a nice chunky C - shaped neck with depth measurements of .897” at the first fret increasing to .997" at the 12th fret. It feels more like it came right off a ’59 LP Reissue. Other SG specs remain the same; a short 24.75” string scale, a 12” radius rosewood fingerboard, 22 medium jumbo frets and a 1.687” nut width. This beautiful SG weighs just 6 pounds, 6 ounces and is nicely balanced with little to no neck dive.

This thing plays like butter and is equipped with specially matched Gibson Historic Reissue Burst Bucker PAF style pickups (a BB2 in the neck position and a BB3 in the bridge position). These pickups make this thing sound like an SG should with great Allman Brothers-like tones. Check out the brief sound sample provided below. If you like SG's, you will absolutely love this example!

This 2019 guitar is in excellent condition and the frets show no observable wear (close-up photos included). Cosmetic flaws are limited to some oxidation of the hardware from the VOS aging treatment along with very light superficial play wear and some very light scratching on the pickguard. It comes in its original Gibson Custom Shop case, also in great condition, along with the certificate of authenticity and hang tags.

This lightly played and relatively rare “Fat Neck” Custom Shop SG built in 2019 can be yours for significantly less than what dealers are getting for new examples. Make this beauty yours!
