2018 Gibson Custom Shop Tom Murphy Painted 1959 Les Paul
A monster example of a limited production R9 from the Custom Shop. Painted by the master himself, Mr. Tom Murphy, who pioneered vintage correct burst finishes and aging for the Gibson Custom Shop. A highly figured maple top on this one, with strong figuring that is very uniform and consistent across the top. A striking version of the classic Washed Cherry finish that moves very much with the light it is exposed to, with elements of warm iced tea to bright reds of the cherry. The burst is translucent along the edge which shows off the great figuring of the top, accentuated by the base yellow of the finish that pops the flame maple. The aniline dye is very rich and brings out the beautiful grain of the mahogany back and neck.
The 2018 spec features the most accurate replica of 50's Les Pauls, in both function and aesthetics. Complete hide glue construction, long neck tenon, truss rod with no tube, single ring Kluson tuners, correct logo and truss rod cover placement as well as the most historically accurate plastics Gibson has developed. This one lives in the more historically accurate, narrower Lifton case.
This guitar is in really excellent condition, although clearly not an instrument that was unplayed. There is minimal play wear or signs of handling, with no notable dings or dents on the instrument. The VOS treatment gives the hardware that pleasing tarnish that will only get better with time and hours of playing. There is a touch of the back dye bleeding into the binding that is so common with these instruments, mainly on the neck but also a bit around the body. There is a set of strap locks installed on the guitar. Clearly this is an instrument that was lovingly played, yet kept in nearly immaculate shape.

A rare model from the bench of Tom Murphy, with a stunning and historically accurate look. Would surely be the centerpiece for a collection of reissue Les Pauls. Happy to provide additional photos or answer any questions
