1970 Gibson Dove
The stunning Gibson Dove acoustic-electric guitar has super-flash good looks from its gloss natural finish, split parallelogram mother-of-pearl fretboard inlays, inlaid ebony bridge, and multi-ply binding to its iconic hand-painted Dove pick guard. The guitar has a loud, high-integrity tone that comes from a solid Sitka spruce top and solid curly maple back and sides. The round profile curly maple neck has a 25-3/4" scale, and the ebony-finished pearl-inlaid headstock contrasts beautifully with the chrome enclosed Gibson tuners.
However, this guitar is not just a flashy museum piece: owners on Harmony Central and elsewhere rave about its playability and sound. One guy said “It sounds very identical to the SJ-200, but it’s smaller and way easier to play....This one is as close to perfect as I could get.” Another says he prefers it to his Martin HD-28, HD-35, and Taylor 410, and a third got a bit carried away perhaps:

The serial number (625315) and the “Made in USA” on the headstock indicate a probable date of 1970—48 years ago—but it certainly doesn’t look middle-aged! There is a humidity crack in the top below the bridge, and a similar long crack in the back, but both have been professionally repaired. It apparently has had an expert neck re-set, and the action is set up at a hair less than 3/32” at the 12th fret low E. If you have ever lusted after a truly spectacular instrument made by a top manufacturer with strong value down the road, or if you just want a gorgeous-looking guitar which plays and sounds great, this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
The hard shell case is a non-original case in excellent condition, and of course it fits this guitar perfectly. Everything’s solid and shiny, the silver plush is fresh and fluffy, and it is an ideal complement to an instrument fit for The King.
