Here we have a 1976 Gibson Gospel guitar, a model that is not that well known as it was made by Gibson in limited numbers from 1972 to 1979. Not to be confused with the so-called Gospel reissue made in the 90s which was essentially a different guitar using different woods but the same name.
The original Gospels were known for their maple sides and arched laminated maple back which give the guitar its distinctive tone—-clear, focused, and articulate—all the things we like about maple. Top is lightly figured spruce.
Nut width is 1.72 inches. Scale length is 25.4 inches. Nickel Grover tuners. Tortoise pickguard in the classic Gibson “western” shape. Body is double bound with tortoise trim. Condition is very good to excellent with a few dings on the top but otherwise a very clean guitar.
This guitar puts us in mind of a maple backed J-200 in tone, but in a standard dreadnaught sized body. These Gibson Gospel guitars are as yet undiscovered by the masses, in part because there aren’t that many in circulation, but if you’re lucky enough to sit down with one, you’ll be surprised how wonderful they sound.
