1915 Gibson L-1 w/OHSC SN. 20987

This century old Gibson is from the period when all of Gibson's guitars had carved tops and backs, and besides being a great old instrument it is a cool piece of sculpture. Acquired from the family of the original owner, the body is 13 5/8" wide at the lower bout and the scale length is 24 1/4", quite small by today's standards but for its day considered a standard sized guitar. This one is entirely original including the tailpiece and pick guard, which is rare as the celluloid plastic of which they are made frequently breaks down over the years requiring replacement. The tailpiece pin block shows the beginning of some break down in the tortoise celluloid, so it will likely require replacement in the future, but it is holding up currently. The top and back of the guitar are crack free and has never had any of the body joint separations that are so common to Gibson guitars and mandolins of this type. The sides have two 1" crack repairs that appear to have been done long ago, they are well done, level and stable. It appears to have been very well cared for by its previous owner. In addition, if it was played it wasn't much as the guitar shows virtually no wear to the finish, fret board or frets. The pronounced, deep "V" shaped neck shows slight relief under tension, the action measures 7/64" at the low E and 5/64" at the high E under tension of light gauge strings. The nut width is1 3/4". The guitar has a bright voice that is woody and dry, weighted toward midrange and treble but with enough bass to satisfy when finger picking. The guitar is best suited to finger style play, ragtime and country blues work very well on this little gem. Also great for old time strumming/vocal accompaniment. Comes with original hard shell case. MORE PHOTOS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. $2100
