Description

Gibson L-50 1937 | $2250 | Very clean example of a desirable Gibson workhorse. The 16" Gibson archtop acoustic was essentially a newly conceived idea in 1937. As the Big Band era grew, so did the guitars that played the music. Examples this clean and original are hard to come by lately, and as a bonus, it retains its original Redline case also in excellent condition. The 'C' stamp inside on the back indicates 1937.

The white celluloid bound body is carved tiger-striped maple. (The figure in this grain is as nice as we've seen in this model.) The top is carved spruce. The 'V' neck is mahogany topped with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. The finger board is the more desirable 'elevated' type, rather that glued flat on the top as in later iterations. The head stock overlay is painted black enamel, with 'Gibson' inlaid in pearl. The tuners are the original Grover Sta-tites. The tailpiece, bridge and end pin are original, with only the pickguard replaced (a few shards of the old one remain in the case box, and note the case top discoloration from the pick guard off-gassing). The top retains its original dome, no sagging.

The body measures 16 1/8" across the lower bout. Scale length is 25 1/8". The fingerboard measures 1 /34" across at the nut.

The are no prior repairs evident except for one or two nicks colored over. The truss rod functions as designed. The back of the neck shows old capo wear in the first position. The first position frets show divots from playing. The finish sparkles as new, with some top checking evident.

The action is set a 6 & 8/64", and the guitar plays smoothly.

Comes with it's original Redline hard case also in excellent condition.
