Beginning in the late 70's, several notable guitar retailers began ordering custom built Les Pauls that more closely resembled the 58-60 "Burst" spec Les Pauls prior to the changes ushered in during the Norlin era. Leo's, Guitar Trader, Strings and Things, and others saw the market for these "reissue" style Les Pauls, and eventually Gibson caught on with what is now referred to as the Custom Shop and the Historic Series. These earlier small-batch guitars are often called "pre-historic" models, and are both fantastic instruments and highly collectible. This 1982 example is commonly referred to as the "Mark Knopfler" Les Paul, as this was the instrument used to record songs like Money for Nothing and Brothers in Arms before he obtained a vintage "Burst". This example has a set of Schaller tuners and a newer truss rod cover, but retains the original 1960 style Cherry Sunburst finish with a highly figured flame-maple top. With a two piece maple top on a mahogany body, single piece mahogany neck with a '59 profile, and a pair of Tim Shaw humbuckers, this guitar is a triumphant return to form for Gibson and the Les Paul model!
