Description

Offered for your consideration is this vintage Gibson LG-1 built in 1963. If you'd like a small-bodied vintage blues machine, this cool piece may be of interest to you.

The LG series was built between 1942 and 1977 in various iterations. This LG-1 has a Spruce top and a Mahogany body with ladder bracing and a 14-1/8" wide lower bout. It has a 24-3/4" string scale and a 1-11/16" nut. It has a 14-fret Mahogany neck with a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard and dot inlays. This 1963 model was originally equipped with a styrene reverse belly bridge that Gibson used between 1962 and 1965, a design that was known to have problems with bridge lift. However, this guitar is now equipped with a much better-than original rosewood replica.

This guitar has the vibe of something Robert Johnson might have played. This is an acoustic guitar in perhaps its most basic form and the tone is woody and oh so natural. Please check out the brief sound sample included below. It plays quite easily considering its simple roots and it has a vibe and tone that is so good that it could easily become your favorite couch buddy guitar. This baby has seen lots and lots of play over the past 57 years but remains in very good condition. It shows its share of scratches and dings, but its flaws are only cosmetic with no structural issues. Even the nasty looking scratch on the back (pictured) is just that, a scratch, not a crack.

I saw that this guitar had possibilities and liked its tone so much that I invested in a replica handmade rosewood bridge, a partial refret, a new bone nut and a new bone saddle. Two of the bridge pins also appear to be replacements.

The guitar plays quite well with 9th fret strings heights of 6/32” on both the low and high E sides. The original brown chipboard case has disintegrated beyond use, but the guitar will ship in a 70's era case that fits the guitar perfectly and protects it well.

If you are looking for a special instrument to help with your musical expression, you would be hard-pressed to find a better tool than this fine old Gibson. Make her yours.
