1935 Gibson Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear for an instrument of its age. Tom converted this Roy Smeck to Spanish style. The process involved: neck reset, neck reshaping taking the nut width down from 2 1/8" to 1 13/16", adding a 1/2" aluminum square tube to stiffen the neck, filled and recut bridge for saddle compensation and fretting. The neck finish is a spot on match of the original done using the same techniques as Gibson used in this time period. The neck reinforcement makes for a stiff neck that will not bend from string tension. The material we use has the same mass as the wood removed and does not color the sound. There are three top cracks that are all repaired. This guitar has an interesting back story. Jackson Browne gave this guitar to his good friend Alan Kozlowski in 1991. In the late 1980s and early 90s Jackson often purchased guitars without having a chance to go tot he dealer and play them. When this Roy Smeck arrived he found the neck had been shaved down when it was converted to Spanish style. He preferred a large neck on a Roy Smeck so he gave it to Alan his good friend and fellow guitar collector. Alan took it to Rick Turner to have it set-up. Jackson on playing it after "When I came over and played it after it came back from Rick Turner's it sounded amazing. I said I can't believe I gave you this guitar!" The guitar has a stereo Amulet system installed in it for Jackson and is the same unit he still uses on stage. It requires a special 5-pin cable and external preamp that is not included. Although it had been previously converted the job was less than professional. Tom did his usual masterful job of carving the neck and giving this guitar the new life it deserves. The sound is full and rich with excellent overtones and a solid fundamental note. Equally fun to fingerpick or flatpick on. Includes a modern hard case.
