Black SG's are pretty rare so I look at any black SG with a heavy dose of skepticism. Black finishes can hide a lot of issues but it will leave plenty of signs if its refinished. On an SG Custom, the first thing to look for is any trace of white paint under the black. It is nearly impossible get every bit of white out of the routs. Nothing there. I look for oversanding (softer contours, rounded edges). Nothing there. Black is generally a very thick finish so I look for the serial number. It's a bit faint but its there. Am I 100% dead certain this guitar isn't refinished? No. it could be a factory refinish but I would expect to see some white left over and I don't. It could have been chemically stripped but that destroys the bindings and the neck binding appears original and in good shape. If I was 100% certain, the guitar would be a lot more expensive. It's priced closer to a refin than an original. I'd be asking $50K if it was 100% original. The guitar has plenty of issues - none of them major. No breaks but a lot of changed parts and a few holes. Here's what is repro: knobs, pickup covers. Here's what is vintage but not original: truss cover (later), Bigsby (late 60's), neck pickup (pre T-top probably 65, narrow spaced). Here's what is likely original (or at least year correct): bridge, pickup rings, middle and bridge pickups (both patent number early type), tuners, harness, guard and control cover. It has holes from a sideways trem making it an early 63. Neck is wide and fairly slim but not a blade neck (.80" and .90"). Frets have been replaced with vintage small frets but not "fretless wonder" frets. Plays great. The tone is bright and powerful. The guitar had Grovers at some point but wafflebacks are stock for 63 and were reinstalled. There are three holes in the top from the sideways trem, there is a small touchup by the bridge pickup tone control and around the trem holes. Case is modern hardshell. More photos coming.
