Description

This early-to-mid 1970s SG features a beautiful Walnut finish on its double-cutaway mahogany body. The bound mahogany neck measures 1 11/16th” at the nut and sports a rosewood finger board with pearloid inlays. It features the larger square-shaped tune-o-matic bridge with a stop tail piece as well as the smaller-sized black-white-black 3-ply pickguard and side-positioned output jack. The humbucking pickups sound fantastic, with all the creamy rhythm tones and crunchy lead tones you would expect. The serial number dates the guitar to 1973 although the potentiometers date to 1972. A plastic Match Maker “pickup balancer” system has been installed but the rest of the electronics look period-correct to the year and model. It is on the lighter end of ‘70s Gibsons, weighing in at about 6 lbs 10 ounces. There is some separation occurring on the bass-hand side wing of the headstock and a chip of missing wood at the top of the headstock. This does not seem to have an effect on the playability and the separation is thin enough to not be immediately noticeable. There is some general playwear on the back and top but otherwise it’s in great shape for its age. Like many other ‘70s Gibsons the frets are on the lower side although there didn’t seem to be any spots where the strings were fretting out when the guitar was tested out. It has been set-up by our in-house tech and has a very comfortable action and playability. Although ‘70s Gibsons, especially SGs, might not be as desirable as ‘50s or ‘60s ones but there are certainly some diamonds in the rough out there. This one in particular plays and sounds fantastic and would be a great addition to any player’s collection of secret weapons! Includes original rectangular ‘70s SG hard shell case.
