This 1986 Gibson SG Standard is in very good cosmetic condition showing signs play wear and age throughout including some light pick marks on the pickguard and body, some small dings on the back of the body and around the body edges, and a small ding on the back of the neck (see photos). This guitar does not have any breaks or repaired breaks. It has remained intact and crack free. This SG has seen its share of changes and modifications over its 36 years. The tuners are recent Gibson Deluxe replacements. The guitar has had a new bone nut made for it. The potentiometers, three way switch and output jack have been replaced. The speed knobs are replacements. The truss rod cover is a recent replacement. The original pickups have been replaced with a set of humbucking sized Rio Grande P-90s. The strap buttons are replaced and the Kahler trem unit is a modern replacement. I did not remove the Kahler to see if this instrument came from the factory with it, but some of these models do have factory installed Kahler tremolos. At the very least, the unit that’s on it was professionally installed before it came to our shop. There are holes remaining above the nut from a removed locking unit (see photos). This guitar weighs 7lb 2oz.
This SG has a fantastic feeling medium C shaped neck profile with a 1 11/16” nut width. This neck is exceptionally comfortable and easy to play. The original frets have been lightly dressed and show no indentation. These frets feel great, are tall and have tons of life left in them. This SG has received a professional set up in our shop and it plays exceptional up and down the rosewood fingerboard with low smooth action and excellent intonation. The guitar is a righteous player. The Rio Grande P-90 pickups sound absolutely gigantic! These pickups really suit the guitar and deliver some of the most pleasing overdriven P-90 sounds that I’ve heard in a while. These P-90s also clean up nicely with the volume control. From clean sparkling neck pickup tones to all out heavy saturated biting bridge pickup tones, this guitar will do it. I had a tremendously good time test driving this old guitar. This SG just feels solid and the tuning stability is excellent. This guitar is housed in an Epiphone hard shell case and the trem arm is missing in action. If you are looking for a seriously great playing and sounding Gibson SG Standard, this 1986 Standard would be a great choice.
