1954 Southern Jumbo with small guard, scalloped bracing and long saddle

Gibson / 1954 Southern Jumbo

The Southern Jumbo was introduced in 1942 as the top-of-the-line model of the time (the Super Jumbo was discontinued due to the war), replacing the J-55, the top model of the J series.

It was built with the best materials available at the time, and was appropriately named "Southern Jumbo" ("Southern" in the U.S. means "tradition," "romance," or "nostalgia").

Although the body size is almost the same as the Advanced Jumbo, the double parallelogram position marks, cell binding on the fingerboard, and multiple-ply body trim give this model a solid sense of originality and luxury.

It is also known as a favorite of Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie. In Japan, Masayoshi Yamazaki's use of this model has brought it into the spotlight, and it now reigns as a popular model along with the J-45.

This model was made in 1954 with a teardrop pickguard and 19 frets, scalloped bracing, and an upper belly bridge with long saddles, making it a premium early model. The long saddle was changed to short saddle around 52-53, so it is very rare to have this specification in 1954.

This is a stunning look that will be 70 years old this year.
You can tell that it has been played and nurtured over the years.
As dignified as it looks, it does not betray expectations and produces a rich sound with plenty of flavor.
The bass is voluptuous and bottomless, and the midrange has a persistent bluesy sound.
The moderately thick 50s round neck is comfortable to hold and has a sense of security as if it sounds as one with the body.

There is no doubt that this guitar will become a special part of the owner's life.
