DESCRIPTION
For you consideration a 1916 Gibson Style A Mandolin in a Natural finish. We don’t typically sell mandolins but when someone brings us a 100 year old Gibson its hard to say no! It’s hard to believe that in 1916 Gibson would have offered this as an entry level instrument. There are so many beautiful details and little ornamentation. From the Rope pattern rosette to the pick guard, inlays and Gibson stamped tail piece.
Specs! This mandolin has had a refret. At one point the back of this instrument was removed, which is quite common for this model. The back often shrinks and needs to be refitted. Some finish touch up. Non-original bridge. Paddle style headstock. Nut width measure 1-3/16″. Mahogany neck with a depth of .95″ at the first fret. It has a 14″ scale length. Ebony fingerboard with a flat radius. Refretted with 20 medium fret that are currently in very good condition. Spruce top with birch back and sides. Top is a “Pumpkin” finish, cherry finished back and sides. Non-original ebony compensated bridge. Nickel “The Gibson” stamped tail piece. Comes with its original hard shell case. Weighs 2 pounds.
What a fun piece! It’s hard to believe this instrument is over 100 years old and still in great play! Sounds great! Could be a fun way to add some textures to a recording. Perfect for Spaghetti Western, Bluegrass, Country, Americana, etc. Awesome part of Gibsons history!
