Guild X50 Grenada 1959 | $ | (v2255) The Guild Grenada X50 (X signifying 'electric' model) was the Hoboken companys answer to the Gibson ES125 in that it was an archtop/electric aimed at the semi-pro player .. a quality instrument for the budget minded. This example dates to 1959 based on its serial number, one piece neck and short scale, the last two appearing in '59. In a few years the model name would change to Cordoba.
The non-cutaway body is made from laminated maple and measures 16 3/8" across at the lower bout. The body depth is 2 3/4". Scale length is 24 3/4". Top and back are bound in white celluloid. The neck is one-piece mahogany, carved in a comfortable 'C' and features an adjustable truss rod. The radiused fingerboard is Brazilian rosewood. The head stock is painted black with the Guild name in gold script. The neck measures 1 5/8" across at the nut, and string spacing is 2" at the saddle. The bridge is the adjustable rosewood type. The PU is single coil covered in white and features a volume and tone control.
The only prior repair appears to be a re-made pickguard attachment at the upper treble bout. The celluloid heel cap as shrunk, as did a bit of the binding at that location. All components appear original but for the aforementioned PG hardware. The guitar is in overall Very Good ++ condition, with very little playing wear, slinky-low action, and only some nicks and dings from use and age. The frets and board show virtually no wear. The PU and both controls function as intended. Currently strung with flat-wounds.
These are really fun guitars to play, built from quality materials and quite attractive pricewise for players looking for a fingerstyle, bluesy electrict archtop. Comes with a newish, well-fitting hard case in excellent condition.
