Hichiriki. Hichiriki is made of sooty bamboo. Rattan-wrapped and lacquered in red lacquer. Round pipe. It is thought to have been made around the Meiji period. Comes with a wooden fan box.
[Condition.]
There is a history of crack repair on the side surface of the tube. There is a very fine crack in the present condition, though it has not reached the inside of the pipe. The pipe body is a little slender compared to the current Hichiriki. The inner diameter of the head is 14mm. The inner diameter of the butt end is 10 x 9 mm. It is a well-balanced instrument.
The Hichiriki is a double reed instrument used to play the main melody in Gagaku, the ancient court music of Japan. It is said to have come from China shortly before the Nara period (710-794). The body is made of bamboo. The inside of the windpipe is lacquered. The head, tail, and finger holes are reinforced with thin strips of rattan or birch bark. The length of a typical Hichiriki (= small Hichiriki) is about 18 cm. The reed is about 5.5 centimeters long and is about the same size as a bassoon.
