While I don't know if the following has ever happened to you, it has occurred many times to me over the years. Here's the scene:

I'm standing in my booth at last week's Fall Philly Guitar show, minding my own business. They had a great crowd there on Saturday, so the room was pretty full. I'm looking around watching the people, trying to see if there are any cases that need to be investigated when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a man walking in the crowd and the very tip of this bass case is just above his head. That's it- all I got was a glimpse and then he was gone. A moment later, he reappeared in the crowd and now the hunt was on.

The trick to tracking down one of these wild animals is to move quickly through the throng without bumping into or jostling anyone. The need to be polite is quite strong in the arena and so, as nicely as I can I start to weave my way through the masses in hopes of scoring what I initially thought was a Steinberger. I get to where I first saw the guy, but he was nowhere to be found and I'm thinking that he could be in another dealer's booth and my dreams of scoring that dead-mint XL2 would be shattered.

I get to the end of the next row and there he was, slowly walking with the crowd and looking around. Now, I'm still weaving and bobbing, trying my best to catch him, but the general pace at one of these guitar shows can best be described as a slow saunter, so making any headway was fairly difficult. Finally, I catch the guy and as I tap him on the shoulder to ask about the bass, I realize that the gigbag is different from any Steinberger case I'd ever seen before. Undeterred, I walk the gentleman back to my booth for a closer look.

What I found was one of the cleanest B2As on the planet and as I began playing it, I got that "now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout" smile on my face. This bass plays effortlessly and is in exceptional condition. The only marks I could find on it were a few small scratches on the rear electronics plate. When the preamp is activated, the tone produced is well-voiced and forceful. The seller intentionally strung the bass with flatwound strings, so we left them on seeing as they are fairly new. The original gigbag is also in excellent condition.

You can believe me when I say that I would not be afraid to walk into a Steinberger convention and put this bass up against any of them in the room. You'll also notice that this package includes the upper strap hook arm and "Licensed by Steinberger" DB bridge detuning system for the low E string. These are just small bonuses you'll receive because after two decades of attending guitar shows, I've figured out how to navigate a roomful of people and guitars without knocking anything over or pissing anyone off. My business partner says it's my short little legs, but I say it's sheer force of will. Either way, this bass came home and is now ready to continue its travels- maybe you're the one to make that happen today?
