Here’s one for the pointy guitar aficionados: an early 1980s Kramer Voyager with the original Strat-like headstock shape. These guitars represented a turn to wood-based guitars following the initial aluminum-necked Kramer guitar design. Kramer would then change to the more familiar “chicken beak” (and later “hockey stick”) shaped headstock when Fender became litigious against the Japanese guitar manufacturer Fernandes (there were also reports of “cease and desist” letters being sent to Kramer as well). These Strat-styled necks were designed by ESP and are indeed very Stratcaster-esque in their feel and shape. This particular example sports a custom finish that just screams 1981: red with a center black/grey checkered pattern surrounded by a gold border. Perhaps the most “new wave” guitar we’ve had come through the shop, it’d be perfectly augmented with a skinny tie and some lime green sunglasses! The serial number on the neck plate is A9639. It features the Fender-style vibrato bridge system; the saddles look to be graphite replacements. The bolt-on maple neck has a maple finger board with 22 frets and dot inlays. It measures 1 11/16th” at the nut. The pickup has been swapped out for a Seymour Duncan ’59 humbucker. The cream pickup surround is also a replacement. Cosmetically this guitar has definitely been played; there is a decent amount of wear, especially around the headstock and the sides of the neck. There is a small crack in the finish below the Low E tuning machine, possibly from a screw being over-tightened. The body is in good condition with only a few light scratches along the sides and some light playwear throughout. The guitar has been professionally set-up by our in-house tech and plays fantastic with very comfortable low action. The frets still have life left to them and there does not seem to be any spots where the neck frets out or significantly buzzes. The guitar weighs in at about 8 lbs 2 ounces. Overall this is a pretty rare find as these early USA wood-necked Kramers are getting harder and harder to track down! Don’t miss your chance to pick this one up!
