Larrivee P-01 PARLOR Good, Original Soft, $575.00

This wonderful parlor guitar was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in May of 2000, according to its serial number (40318) and what I can figure out from the Larrivee website. The P-01 is a substantial upgrade from the parlor guitars offered by most of the mid-range makers, but its superiority is in the quality of its woods and design rather than flashy inlays. The solid mahogany back and sides of this P-01 is a dense tonewood which most players feel delivers more of a punch, or edge, and a bit more volume and sustain than rosewood. Its warmth and power is a really good match to the solid spruce top, which is inherently bright.

For those of you that are not familiar with this model, it's a true 3/4 size Parlor guitar, not to be confused with similar sized travel guitars. It features hand-carved forward-shifted X-bracing, a hand-fitted dovetail neck joint, all solid wood construction with select Spruce soundboard, gorgeous Mahogany back and sides, one-piece Mahogany neck, and the fretboard and bridge are rich dark Ebony. The scale is 24" and the nut width is 1-3/4" so it’s an easy guitar to play, and perfectly suited for finger style or flat-picking.

Current Larrivee Parlors have a thicker high-gloss finish—but they also have a retail price of $1550 so this is a great bargain. As the pictures indicate, cosmetically and structurally this particular P-01 is now in carefully and expertly repaired condition, having suffered some kind of domestic disaster about which I never asked. As the pictures show, the treble side of the lower bout has been glued, cleated, and patched with some new wood spliced in; the repair is solid and smooth, but quite visible, and extends into a 1” triangle on the back. Also on the back, there is about a 3” section at the top of the upper bout which has been similarly glued, cleated, and patched, and the top has a 3” repaired crack at the edge of the lower bout.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that these repairs are not visible to an audience—or even to you as the player—so they are
not distracting, and Larrivee Parlors are really pretty little guitars. Even better, it is now totally checked out and set up, and it has a straight neck, a flat top, and very little pick wear or fret wear. The nut and saddle have been set up at a bit under 3/32” at the 12th fret low E, and I must say it performs like a dream, even with the ancient strings currently installed (if I had any light gauge strings, I’d change ‘em before I sold it, but I only have medium and heavier).

The included Larrivee soft case is in good condition. The zippers and straps work great, the thick lining is intact, and structurally it is solid. It is a light-weight useful complement for this cool guitar—and of course it offers more than adequate protection.
