The original Martin Thinline pickup in this guitar was acting up so we added an LR Baggs I-Beam pickup with a volume control to the guitar. In the process we added a new bone saddle as well.
We took in a few guitars from Legend in a recent collection buy, a brand that I had not previously encountered. The guitars are fantastic and completely trounce everything out there in the price range. Constructed of high quality woods with solid tops, backs and sides, each one we've received has exceeded our expectations, including this MJ502 mini jumbo.
Examples of Legend acoustics are hard to find. What you do see when Googling is a bunch of forum chatter, with owners extolling the goodness of the guitars and others wondering what happened to the company as they clearly aren't making acoustics any longer.
What I assume happened is that the company got involved with Guitar Center, and GC didn't really seem to get behind the line, eventually marking the guitars down below cost and blowing them out, likely undermining the brand with other dealers. This example includes the sale price tag from GC, marked at just $999.99 - a total steal, but an unsustainable price for future sales.
The previous owner of this guitar bought several during that weak Guitar Center moment and hid the guitars until now. As you can see in our pics, the guitar was rarely, if ever, played.
There are no issues or repairs. The guitar set up perfectly with a new set of strings and it sounds really good. As you play it, it will open up even more, as solid wood acoustics do.
Included is the original case and paperwork.
"The Legend Guitar Company was formed in the latter days of 1998 by master luthiers Jeff Sigurdson, Michael Soper, and Jesse Brace with the able assistance of business partner and renowned guitar broker, Robert Brown. Jeff, Michael, and Jesse bring nearly 40 years of combined experience in larger guitar shops to the design and building of their own handmade, high-end acoustic guitars. Their specific goal was to create vintage sounding instruments with the performance characteristics of more modern designs at a price that was within the reach of a much wider audience. The combination of silky fast action, deliciously balanced, highly resonant response, as well as classic yet functionally rich beauty, makes these limited production instruments simply irresistible.
The Legend team's first 13 guitars were named the Nina, after Jesse Brace's daughter. This rare initial group of instruments ranged from OM to Dreadnaught cutaway versions. All subsequent models bear the Legend name. Current models include several OMs, MJs and Dreadnoughts. With growing interest from larger instrument dealers, who soon recognized the price versus quality advantage of the Legend designs, the model lines have been expanded to include the increasingly popular cutaway version in each of the sizes. Also included are options for standard or slotted (classical style) head stocks and high quality electronics from Fishman and B-Band. Legend recently introduced its classical guitar line with the CLA-102, building on the reputation that Jeff Sigurdson has earned as the creator of some of the most sought after classical and flamenco style guitars in the Northwest"
