Description

Beautiful 1971 Martin D-18S (SN. 282200) with hard shell Eastman case. The guitar has had the following work done at Kovacik Guitars & Fretted Instrument Repair within the last few years: Neck reset, refret, and repair of a couple of hairline back cracks. The tuners were replaced several years ago and the original black pickguard replaced by an original 60s Martin tortoise celluloid pickguard by David LaPlante. It also had a repair to some back damage at the edge of the lower bout curve on the bass side (see pics) that was done prior to the previous owner's acquisition of the guitar. Somewhere along the line the guitar also was stamped on the back of the head stock with the "CF Martin & Co Nazareth" head stock stamp like the factory used to stamp head stocks prior to 1934. The stamp looks 100% authentic, though it is not correct for the period of the guitar. Gives the guitar a more 'vintage' vibe. Currently the guitar needs nothing. The action is perfect with generous saddle height and the neck is dead straight under tension. The top is flat with no bridge deflection/rotation. Structurally the guitar is 100% solid. Cosmetically it shows typical wear for its age. There is play wear to the finish along with some wash board type wear below the pick guard (at the treble corner of the bridge) and minor wear to the top along the treble edge of the fret board (see pics). The top has no cracks. The sides show one small (1") crack down near the tail block and as mentioned there are a few repaired hairline cracks in the back. The neck shows little wear, the Brazilian rosewood fret board has some first position wear but nothing severe. The frets are perfect, owing to the recent refret. The original Brazilian rosewood bridge is full height, never been shaved or otherwise altered. All of the internal bracing is original and intact. The tuners are replacements, Waverly individual open gear with tortoise buttons and there's a matching tortoise strap button installed. And forget anything you've ever heard, read, or even experienced about large rosewood bridge plates in 70s guitars being the death of good tone. This guitar has a huge, booming voice with a very strong bottom end, bold midrange and clear, crisp/woody trebles. Everything you want in a vintage mahogany Martin guitar. All that and a 1 7/8" nut width. This is a serious guitar folks, strap in...$3500 + shipping, 8% NYS sales tax for NY buyers. No international shipping offered, US shipping only.
