Description

I don't invest in many large bodied guitars these days, as more and more players move to more comfortably-sized acoustic models. There remains a place for big guitars of course and this is one beauty I just couldn't pass up, an extremely well-preserved Martin J-41 Special built in 2006. The J-41 Special is a 16" Jumbo, with a relatively narrow waist that makes it a bit more comfortable play than other big bodied guitars. The "Special" in this model relates to the high-end cosmetics, the Modified V-shaped neck carve and the 1.75" nut that Martin gave this guitar as compared to the Standard J-40. The top is Sitka which has aged nicely and the back and sides are East Indian Rosewood. The string scale is 25.4" and the string spacing is 2-1/4" at the bridge. Players who don't like a large neck will want to stay away from this guitar, as the neck depths on this instrument measure .875" at the first fret and .975" at the ninth fret. The playability is superb, however, with 12th fret string heights of 7/64" on the low E side and 5/64" on the high E side. As you would expect, this is one powerful and responsive guitar, that can be as loud or as intimate as you want it to be. The tone is quite balanced and rich across the tonal spectrum and notes bloom nicely. An LR Baggs end-pin pickup with sound hole volume control has been installed to facilitate stage play or recording. Martin didn't make many of these, just a few hundred I'm told, and there can't be more than a few that are in the superb condition that this guitar is. Just a few very light clearcoat scuffs on the back and in the picking area are the only flaws to be found and the frets are in superb condition. It comes in it's original Martin case in similarly well-preserved condition. If you are in the market for a classy, big-bodied Martin in superb condition, this may be the guitar for you!
