If you love Martin guitars as we do, then it is likely you know how special this instrument is and how difficult these are to find, a Martin M-30 Jorma Kaukonen Custom Artist built in 2011. I'm not sure how many of these that Martin actually built, but it wasn't many and this is number 74 from the limited run, serial number 1746902. Jorma asked Martin to create this model apparently after playing one of David Bromberg's M-42 signature models and decided a similar guitar was just what he was looking for.
This is a 0000 sized 14-fret guitar with the slightly narrower body depth of an 000, a 25.4" string scale and an oversized sound hole. Jorma requested an Alpine Spruce top with forward shifted scalloped bracing and really nice Sitka Spruce for the back and sides. It has a 1-3/4" nut width and 2-5/16" string spacing. The Mahogany neck shape has Martin's Modified V shape. The custom cosmetics are to Jorma's taste and quite tasteful and elegant.
This guitar was designed to be played either fingerstyle or with a flat pick and to have a big clear and dynamic voice. It has a nicely balanced tone across all frequencies and the bass notes are rich and strong without getting muddy. The term "banjo killer" certainly applies to this wonderful instrument. Please check out the brief sound sample provided below (just click the "SoundCloud" box). It is very touch sensitive and easy to play and is currently set up with light gauge strings and 12th fret string heights of 6/64" on the low E side and 4/64" on the high E side.
This guitar is in amazing original condition and has just been gone over by the professionals at Parkway Music (an authorized Martin dealer). It has a few tiny flaws which I hesitate to point out in that they are so minor, but they are shown in one of the included photos. The frets are in great shape too. I have never come across one of these in such fine condition. It comes in it's original Geib-style case which is also in superb condition.
These wonderful guitars are few and far between. It has been years since I've seen another of these and it wasn't in anywhere near the fine condition of this example. Make it yours while you can!
