This is an early, early National New Yorker lap steel with its accompanying Model 75 amplifier. Both the amp and the case of the steel are covered in incredibly clean and original tweed. It is always very cool to see a pair of items that has been together from the outset.
The set appears to be from 1940, based on the serial number plate on the steel. The amp pre-dates a schematic I found for it that was dated to 1943.
As I stated above, the two pieces are in beautiful cosmetic condition.
The steel works perfectly and is all original. The pickup output measures 6.27k. This one is the cleanest you'll see! There is some great case candy along with it, including: a Hawaiian guitar instruction book, a music book with the original owner's notes, the original National instruction sheet, the original cable, a couple of old slides and finger picks, the case key and its original envelope, the amplifier's instruction sheet, the amplifier's accessory sheet, the amplifier's warranty registration postcard, and an old advertising contract card.
The latches, handle and hinges on the case all work perfectly.
The amp obviously needed work when it arrived. It had original capacitors throughout. All caps were updated, along with one resistor. One tube was also replaced. All the parts that were replaced are included with the amp except for the replaced tube.
I did just enough work to get the amp up and running. It is not loud at all - perhaps a symptom of a tired field-coil speaker, but it works well. The original power cable is still in place. I had to leave it. It is still flexible and useable, not dried out and crumbly as I had expected it would be. Everything else on the amp is original - the handle, grille cloth, etc, etc.
This set is museum worthy!
