Used c1953 Oahu Publishing Company Electric Steel Guitar serial number X18314.
This lap steel guitar is in very good original condition with the exception of the tuners having been replaced with new Kluson units. The output cable was crumbling so we replaced that too. The Oahu Publishing Company of Cleveland, Ohio was established by Harry G Stanley. One of their marketing plans was to wholesale guitars to schools. Oahu branded instruments were made by a number of manufacturers including Kay, Harmony, Valco and Rickenbacker. This example is Valco made. The Oahu brand was also attached to acoustic guitars, amplifiers and accessories. The company closed in 1985.
It is the opinion of some that the lap steel guitars branded as Oahu had the best sound. The pickup with the strings passing through, has a visceral gritty tone often described as “screaming”.
After researching at length, we have been unable to come up with a name for this model. However the nick-name “Killer Bee” has been referenced due to the color black with yellow letters down the neck.
This is a great piece of lap steel evolution and a very palatable price!
*Please note: we do our best giving descriptions of used pieces. We have found it impossible to describe every mark on an instrument or amp that is not in the "mint" category. Also, what's important to you may not be important to someone else. For example, you may say, "I don't care what it looks like as long as it plays or sounds well." Another person may say, "Body cosmetics are very important to me so tell me about every scratch, nick and blemish." So, please ask the questions that are most important to you. If you ask they will be answered. They are free and there's no limit. Additional photos can also be made available.
