Ovation guitars were developed by aeronautical engineer Charles Kaman starting in the mid 60s. Kaman built helicopters for Igor Sigorsky before building his own brand. He then founded Ovation guitars. Ovation guitars were the first production guitars to use fiberglass backs, and brought a number of innovative features never before used on acoustic guitars. The 1111 or Balladeer series was a mainstay of the Ovation line-up through the 70s and 80s, and has been released in a number of variations.
