This is a very unusual Recording King M5 that was made by Gibson guitars in 1939. It is a mode M5, which was the fanciest Recording King model in 1939, but the M5 was an acoustic guitar, and this instrument has an original Charlie Christian Style pickup. In 1939 Recording Kind made a couple of slightly smaller electric Archtops that had this pickup, including the Roy Smeck model, but we have never seen an electric M5, and it does not appear in the 1939 recording king catalog. With its large body and fancy ornamentation it is closer to a ES-250 than anything else. Whether this was a one off or custom ordered will likely never be known, but this is a fantastic playing and sounding guitar. It shows some normal play wear, but overall this guitar is in very good condition for its age. It has been pro-setup and needs nothing. It comes with the original case.
