Description

Interesting 1940s era Regal "Custom Built" label deep body grand concert (15") size guitar. The body depth is 4 3/4" at the tail block and 3 3/4" at the neck block, quite a bit deeper than a standard grand concert size, nearly as deep as a dreadnought. The scale length is 25.5, the nut width is 1 3/4." The solid spruce top is double X braced (standard X pattern just below the soundhole, two tone bars crossing in an X pattern below the bridge plate). The back and sides are either maple or birch but are grain painted to look like rosewood. The neck is maple and was originally finished with a dark tint but as you can see in the pics most of the finish on the neck has been worn away. The neck looks like it might have had the worn area sealed with some finish long ago, hard to tell for sure, but the surface of the worn area is burnished smooth and glossy. The overall look of the guitar is a bit worn but still standing tall. The back and sides are crack free but the top shows 5 old crack repairs. These were all done prior to acquisition of the guitar at Kovacik Guitars, and these repairs, while not cosmetically perfect have been left alone as they are structurally solid. The following work was done here in my shop: neck reset, bridge replacement, reglue of a few braces, new saddle, some binding repairs and set up. I think at some point the tuners, while old, were probably replaced as I don't think the Klusons on the guitar are quite early enough for the instrument. Likely the originals were open gear Klusons. The playability is excellent...the neck angle is perfect and the neck is straight under tension and has a rather full "C" barrel profile. The action measures 6/64" on the low E at the 12th fret and 5/64" at the high E with ample saddle height for adjustment in the future. The guitar is best when fingerpicked, sweet and clean, think a Gibson LG-2 on steroids. Sound file available on request. Comes with a new Guardian hard shell case. $1650 + shipping by UPS ground, 8% sales tax added for NY residents...Ships to US only, no international shipping offered.
