C. 1940 Regal built Recording King Jumbo w/hsc
Rare and cool X braced ROSEWOOD Recording King jumbo from about 1940. This is from the period in which Regal owned the Recording King name and was building the brand for sale through the Montgomery Ward catalog. The guitar has solid rosewood back and sides, solid spruce top, mahogany neck and a rosewood fret board and bridge. The guitar is entirely original, down to the Kluson strip tuners with deco style 'radiator cover' back plates and the original strap bracket still mounted to the back of the headstock. There once would have been an accompanying nickel plate bracket at the end block to loop the original 'rope' type strap through but that bracket is gone from the guitar. Overall the guitar is in good cosmetic and very solid structural condition though there are some old repairs. There is a professionally repaired hairline top crack below the bridge (see pics) that is tight/level/flat/stable. There is also an old repaired 'punch' repair in the lower bout of the bass side...not all that pretty but it is level, smooth and very solid so I've opted to leave it be (see pics). There is also a repaired crack of the sides across the tail block, but a careful examination of the tail block on the inside reveals no evidence that the tail block was ever involved in that crack or repair. There are two old cracks to the treble side that run parallel to the grain, long ago repaired and solid, visible in the pics. The saddle slot has been re-routed to deepen it an provide better support for the saddle. The interior of the guitar is original and in great shape, the only repair to the interior appears to be a thin veneer cap to the bridge plate to deal with wear to the pin holes. The nut width is 1 3/4" at the nut and the neck has a substantial "V" profile...not for the weak. A neck reset was done on the guitar a few years back and the angle is excellent making for very good playability. The action measures 7/64" and 5/64" at the 12th fret with good saddle height. The frets are in very good shape. Sonically the guitar is excellent...strong across the entire tonal range with excellent headroom and volume, very good for flat picking. Sound file available on request. Comes with a modern hard shell case. The side repair has no bearing whatsoever on the tone of this guitar, but has a significant bearing on price...how often do you get a shot at a pre-war X braced rosewood jumbo for $3750?
