1950's Unknown Custom Built Metal Bodied Guitar With 50's Gibson Neck
Before there were "vintage guitars" there were just "old guitars." There were no rules on what you could do or shouldn't do. If you were bold, and a metal worker, you took the neck the neck off your favorite Gibson acoustic and built an electric body for it!
Yep, with the trapezoid inlays the most likely candidate for the donor neck is a J160E. The size of the neck and the Brazillian rosewood fingerboard seems to date it to the 50's. From there pretty much everything is scratch built including the pickups, bridge, and even the switch tip. It seems the only things not machined by this builder would be the tuners, pots, switch, jack, and strap buttons (which looks like drawer pulls)!
The pickups are relatively low output which would have been in line with most at the time. They're single coils but with the metal body they are very well shielded. The intonation is adjustable and the bridge itself is similar to a Gibson wraparound bridge. The guitar is hollow but it is still heavy coming in at 12.3 lbs. Comes with an equally heavy home built case.
