This late 1800s Washburn New Model parlor guitar is a gorgeous piece that completely rumbles with vibration when you play it.
I just sat in my armchair to reacquaint myself with the guitar as it had been at a friend's shop for some time, awaiting a bit of repair. I got lost here for a while. What a great sounding guitar! The woods are gorgeous and light. The Brazilian back and sides are beautiful.
The finish feels original - it is so light - but at first glance it just seems to clean to be true. Checking it out thoroughly, I feel like it is impossible for it to have been refinished. There is no sign that it has been. Being that it came in the original trap door case, and that parts like the tuners are so unbelievably clean, I'm calling it original.
The top had three hairline cracks that our friend Bruce Macmillan fixed beautifully. The top shows a little distortion, but far less than others I've come across. It is raised slightly behind the bridge, and dips slightly around the soundhole. This has caused a slight separation of the fretboard from the top, but the area is stable and not in need of work. This may have been part of an older neck reset process. The neck heel appears to have cracked during that work, and it was expertly repaired.
