1921 Bacon Artist Model Burst

This rare mandolin was made during the same era as the Gibson F-4 and the Lyon & Healy Style A, with comparable craftmanship and tonal quality. These uniquely shaped instruments, with four distinctive "points" were made in Groton, Connecticut by the Bacon Banjo Company and endorsed by mandolin virtuoso William Place, Jr. They featured hand-carved spruce tops and figured maple back & sides, bound with ivoroid purfling that extended over the edges like a violin. The scale length is 13 7/8? inches with an extremely comfortable neck. The fingerboard is ebony and the unbound peghead has an attractive floral design and the Bacon logo inlaid in pearl.
The Artist model was the top of the Bacon mandolin line and its rich, full tonality was perfect for the music of its day and today as well. Its design was recently replicated by Eastman mandolins as their DGM-2 model, based on an original example from the collection of David Grisman. That model is no longer being manufactured, but here's your chance to own an original!
The item is in excellent condition, although the Bacon tailpiece cover and internal label are missing.
